“Hater” BY David Moody
This book was a surprise from the beginning. I thought the author very brave to have such a weak and wining main character. I also thought his use and style of first person narrative a little awkward. But as it was a fast read and interesting idea, I stuck with it until I was hooked. Not much in this book is predictable. Most of the time I was as clueless as the narrator as he walked helplessly thorough his insane landscape as to what was happening or would happen.
People are for no sensible reason attacking and killing the strangers around them. Rather than fighting or looking for a cure the hero is swept helplessly along in this cauldron of fear and hate. It is his extra-ordinariness that made me keep reading. You can’t help but identify with this guy at lest on some level. What happens came as a complete surprise.
This is a quick read, a good start to the Halloween season, and food for thought. One warning - it does end with “To be Continued” I like to know that the story ends in the middle before I start reading so I don’t keep wondering how is the author ever going to pull all this together in ten pages.
