Well Mr. Smith has done it again. Leon Courtney is a young British officer who isn’t happy about his place and prospects for a military career. What he wants to be is a great hunter ranging the African landscape after dangerous game in the time just before World war one. He gets his wish and we are off on an exciting adventure with him hunting elephant, lion and buffalo. We see Africa through the eyes of someone who sincerely loves the continent, its people, places and wildlife.
Wilbur Smith likes to do things on a grand scale. We are treated to a safari with Teddy Roosevelt and his son Kermit. We ride in the first planes to reach Africa and get deeply involved in the intrigue and plotting over Africa preceding the Great War.
Leon Courtney is a thoroughly likeable character, ever capable; he is always human with faults, failings, and fears, a young man ready for action and adventure love and romance.
I like Mr. Smith’s book especially his Ancient Egypt series and I believe his fans and new readers will enjoy this action adventure very much.
